UK logistics operators are beginning to evaluate humanoid robots for real deployment. This guide covers the platforms in production use, what the procurement process looks like and what procurement teams need to understand before they start.
The UK logistics sector is under sustained pressure: labour shortages, rising wage costs and demand peaks that conventional automation struggles to absorb efficiently. Humanoid robots are now entering commercial deployment in logistics contexts, primarily in the US, and UK operators are increasingly asking whether and when these platforms make sense for UK warehouse environments. This guide gives a grounded answer to that question.
Humanoid robots are beginning commercial deployment in logistics before other sectors for a specific reason: warehouses are structured environments. The tasks are repetitive. The layout is defined. The objects handled are often standardised. These are exactly the conditions where current robotic capability can deliver reliable performance without requiring general intelligence.
The human form factor matters in logistics because existing warehouse infrastructure is built around human workers. Aisles, shelving heights, conveyor interfaces and loading docks were not designed for wheeled robots. A bipedal platform that can navigate this existing infrastructure is potentially deployable without costly facility redesign. That is the practical argument behind the commercial interest in humanoid logistics robots.
The most significant reference deployment is Agility Robotics' Digit within Amazon fulfilment centres in the US. Digit is handling tote movement between conveyor systems and storage areas: a defined, repetitive task in a structured environment. This is not a pilot. It is a production system operating at scale within one of the world's most demanding logistics operations.
Figure 02, developed by Figure AI and backed by a consortium including BMW and Microsoft, is in deployment at the BMW Manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This is an automotive assembly context but the lessons on human-robot coworking, safety integration and operational reliability are directly applicable to logistics settings.
Boston Dynamics' Atlas, widely known from demonstration videos, is available to research institutions and enterprise partners under a commercial programme. Its capabilities in manipulation and navigation are impressive, but it remains a premium enterprise platform at a corresponding price point.
There is no established UK sales channel for any of the leading logistics humanoid platforms as of September 2026. Agility Robotics' focus is on North American deployments. Figure AI's commercial programme is enterprise-direct and US-centric at this stage. Boston Dynamics has a stronger international presence through its Spot robot business, which may provide a pathway for UK Atlas discussions, but this is not a standard sales route.
The most accessible platform physically available to UK buyers is the Unitree G1, which UK resellers can supply. The G1 is a research and development platform, not a purpose-built logistics system, but it is the entry point for UK organisations wanting to build internal humanoid robotics capability before the specialist platforms reach UK sales channels.
Any humanoid robot procured from a US vendor for UK deployment involves costs beyond the hardware price. Import duty applies to industrial robots under UKGT tariff headings, and VAT at 20 per cent applies to the full landed value including freight. A UK freight forwarder experienced with industrial equipment is essential.
Integration costs are substantial. Deploying a humanoid logistics robot requires warehouse management system integration, safety risk assessment under the Machinery Directive equivalent UK regulations, employee consultation under UK employment law, and commissioning by qualified robotics engineers. For a first deployment without an established integration partner, these costs can rival or exceed the hardware cost.
Ongoing maintenance contracts are a critical consideration when procuring from a vendor with no UK service presence. Understanding the parts supply chain, remote monitoring capabilities and escalation path for hardware failures should be part of any procurement negotiation.
Humanoid robots operating in UK workplaces are subject to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The HSE's guidance on collaborative robots provides the most directly applicable framework for human-robot coworking scenarios.
UK employers have a duty to assess risks to employees from the introduction of robotic equipment. A formal risk assessment, documented safety case and employee consultation are not optional. For a first humanoid deployment, engaging an HSE-accredited safety consultant early in the process is advisable.
A structured evaluation process for humanoid logistics robotics in a UK context should work through several stages before any procurement commitment.
Not at scale yet in the UK. The most significant commercial deployments of humanoid robots in logistics are in the US, primarily Agility Digit with Amazon. UK logistics operators are in evaluation and pilot stages. Some UK-based robotics integrators are building relationships with platform vendors to support UK deployments as the technology matures.
Agility Digit has the most proven commercial logistics track record, through its Amazon deployment. For UK procurement, it requires direct engagement with Agility Robotics in the US as there is no established UK channel. The Unitree G1 is the most accessible platform available to UK buyers but is a research and development unit, not a production logistics system. Figure 02 is targeting enterprise manufacturing and logistics applications and is available for enterprise enquiry.
Total deployment cost includes the hardware price, import costs (duty plus 20 per cent VAT on landed value), integration and commissioning, safety assessment under UK HSE guidelines, and ongoing maintenance. At current enterprise prices of USD 150,000 to USD 250,000 per unit plus UK import and integration costs, a realistic total cost of ownership for a first UK deployment is substantial. ROI cases depend heavily on throughput requirements, shift patterns and site-specific labour costs.
